OMBAC Rugby: A Legacy of grit, sand, and success
OMBAC Rugby's story isn't just about tackles, tries, and trophies. It's a tale of community, camaraderie, and the unwavering spirit of Old Mission Beach woven into the fabric of American rugby.
Early Days (1930s-1950s)
The seeds of OMBAC were sown in the 1930s and 40s, when friendships forged on the beaches and boardwalks of Old Mission Beach laid the foundation for a future athletic club.
In 1954, the official Old Mission Beach Athletic Club (OMBAC) was born, encompassing diverse sports like volleyball, surfing, and, eventually, rugby.
Birth of a rugby powerhouse (1960s)
In 1966, fueled by the passion of San Diego State University rugby alumni, OMBAC Rugby emerged as a distinct entity within the club.
Two years later, in 1968, they charged onto the scene in first-division competition, showcasing their tenacity and talent.
Dominating the national scene (1970s-1990s)
The 1970s saw OMBAC establish itself as a force to be reckoned with, winning its first national title in 1974.
The next two decades were a golden age, marked by an unstoppable string of victories:
Six national Rugby Sevens titles (1974, 1979, 1981, 1987, 1992, 1993)
Five national Rugby Fifteens titles (1988, 1989, 1991, 1993, 1994, 1996)
This era cemented OMBAC's reputation as a dominant force in American rugby.
Navigating the changing landscape (2000s-present)
The new millennium brought new challenges, with the rise of professional rugby and increased competition.
Despite facing tough competition, OMBAC remained a constant contender, adapting and evolving its game.
Notable achievements include:
2010 U.S.A. D3 National Champions
